I interviewed for Ecotextile News the president of EURATEX – European Apparel and Textile Confederation Mario Jorge Machado, who I met at Premiere Vision. In his first public meeting as President he spoke about important issues, such as reciprocity and the need for border controls that prevent the entry of animals that do not respect the standards that Europe is setting to reduce the environmental and social impact of the textile and fashion industry. The challenge of sustainability is necessary, but must not lead to a loss of competitiveness. Machado underlined the central role of consumers: in the end they decide in which direction the market should go. For this reason, information and correct communication are issues that involve the entire fashion sector, on which there is a lot to work on.

In closing he said: “Reciprocity is the key: we don’t want a clean Europe in a dirty world.” How can we blame him?
